Lacierda : We're Ready Global Terror Alert

November 4, 2010 press release by the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda today emphasized that while the Philippines was not singled out as a possible site of terrorist activity as regards the travel advisories issued by the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, preparations are still being put in place in line with the global terror alert.
“The information has not yet been verified, nonetheless, we are ready,” Lacierda said. He added that the PNP has extended its red alert status on the National Capital Region, and stressed that preemption and prevention are the keys in dealing with terrorist threats.
NCRPO has increased police visibility and deployed tourist police in malls, hotels, and commercial establishments. Additional foot patrols and K-9 units have also been deployed in our LRT and MRT lines.” He expressed gratitude to the private sector “for being our partners in ensuring the safety of the public.”
Lacierda reiterated that while the global alert does not single out the Philippines, “we can never be too cautious. The government is going the extra mile. Nakatutok po si Presidente dito, at regular siyang nakakakuha ng mga intelligence update mula sa ating mga ahensya. (The President is keeping his eye on this issue, and he is getting regular intelligence updates from the agencies concerned.)”
