General Eduardo Oban Jr.
Hailing from Castilla, Sorsogon and a graduate of Philippine Military Academy (PMA), General Oban belongs to the PMA “Matapat” Class of 1979. While performing his functions as the Director for Operations of the 5th Fighter Wing of the Philippine Air Force (PAF), he was able to finish his master’s degree in Business Economics from the University of Asia and the Pacific in 2005.
A well-experienced military officer, Gen. Oban was assigned to various posts in the Armed Forces of the Philippines:
Special Assistant to the Minister at the Ministry of Trade and Industry,
Military Assistant to the Deputy Minister at the Ministry of National Defense,
Group Commander of the Intelligence and Security Group of the Department of National Defense.
Held two Squadron Commander Positions at the 5th Fighter Wing: as Group Commander of Tactical Operations Group 12 and as Director for Operations of the 5th Fighter Wing.
Was an Executive Officer of OJ9 which is the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Capability Materiel and Technology Development.
Was an AFP Public Information Officer.
Was Vice Commander, after having been Assistant Chief of Air Staff for Operations, A3, and Commander of Air Defense Wing and 1st Air Division.
Was the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Programs, J5, of the AFP.
Gen. Oban is a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions which includes four Distinguished Service Stars, a number of Military Merit Medals, a Golden Aviator Award, two Group Commander of the Year Award, PAF Group Commander of the Year Award and Military Commendation Medals and other ribbons.3
Gen. Oban is the third Chief of Staff to come from the Air Force since 1996. He also played a major role in the negotiation with Magdalo rebels involved in the Oakwood mutiny in 2003.1
On March 7, 2011, the command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines was transferred to Gen. Oban. President Benigno S. Aquino III expressed his full trust and confidence on newly appointed Chief of Staff. In turn, Gen. Oban in his speech during the turnover, said “mahal na Pangulo, kasama niyo kami sa pagtahak ng matuwid na daan.”
