Inauguration of Urdaneta Engineered Sanitary Landfill
President Benigno S. Aquino III led the inauguration of the Urdaneta Engineered Sanitary Landfill (UESL) in Urdaneta City during his visit to Pangasinan. The landfill is the first of its kind in the province and the second in the entire Ilocos Region.
In his message, the President emphasized the importance of solid waste management as one of the ways to protect and save the environment. He discussed his government's initiatives to pursue this cause, such as the Executive Order Number 26 he signed last February which is the National Greening Program. This entails planting of trees to more than one and a half hectares of land all over the country. He also mentioned Executive Order Number 23 which prohibits the cutting of trees in natural and residual forests, the forming of the Anti-Illegal Task Force, and his directive to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) against the issuance of logging permit and renewal of licenses to all loggers in natural forests.
The six-hectare Urdaneta Engineered Sanitary Landfill was built at a project cost of P200 million through a loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines. It can accomodate a total of 40 tons of compacted solid waste per day and is envisioned to become an income-generating facility for the local government thru tie-ups with nearby cities and municipalities.
