Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo on Friday urged all provincial governors, and city and municipal mayors to immediately conduct an assessment and inspection of all local government infrastructure projects and public buildings in their respective localities.
Robredo said the mandatory inspection was part of the government’s disaster preparedness and risk-reduction programs that should be implemented in all local government units (LGUs).
“Our country is prone to earthquakes; and conscious recognition of this vulnerability brings to the fore the key role that LGUs must perform in disaster preparedness and mitigation,” he said
Robredo emphasized that the inspection and assessment should relate to the strength, rigidity, and resistance to wind and seismic loadings of the building or structure.
The call for an effort to inspect structures is in line with a directive from President Benigno S. Aquino III for the DILG to assess the disaster preparedness and response programs of LGUs based on the guidelines of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC).
In his memorandum circular, the DILG Secretary advised local chief executives to communicate directly with the nearest Department of Public Work and Highways (DPWH) office in the event external expertise is required for the inspection and assessment.
