Senior citizens will be treated to free train rides on Saturday, October 8, in line with the celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week (EFW) from October 1-7, 2011. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), lead agency for the EFW celebration, has partnered with the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) so that senior citizens may avail of free LRT rides.
Free rides will be available at the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 (Baclaran to Roosevelt) and Line 2 (Recto to Santolan) for the whole day of October 8. Senior citizens need only present their valid Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) ID to avail of this special offer.
The LRT line 1 runs along Taft Avenue from Baclaran in Parañaque, to Roosevelt in Quezon City, while line 2 runs along Aurora Boulevard from Recto in Manila to Santolan, Marikina.
The DSWD has been holding several activities since October 1 for the EFW celebration.
The EFW is celebrated annually from October 1 to 7, pursuant to Proclamation No. 470 issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos on September 26, 1994. The event aims to increase public awareness on the different issues concerning the sector.
