Statement of Secretary Albert F. del Rosario:On the plan of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to launch a satellite
[Delivered at the Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on April 2, 2012]
The Philippines has been consistently supportive of efforts to secure the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and likewise encouraged the resumption of the Six Party Talks as key to achieving this goal.
On the latest developments in the Korean Peninsula, the Philippines expresses grave concern over the announced plan of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to launch a satellite between April 12 and 16.
The Philippines has strongly suggested that other ASEAN Member States urge the DPRK not to proceed with its planned launch and abide by UN Security Council Resolutions 1874 and 1718 and suspend its ballistic missile program and activities.
To this end, Cambodia, the ASEAN Chair, gave assurance that the ASEAN position of dissuading the launch will be included in the ASEAN Chairman’s Statement.
