Speaker Belmonte's Statement on 150th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal

Dr. Jose Rizal's teachings and example remain relevant to us 150 years since his birth. His honest and incisive critique of the ills of society stimulated national reflection, emboldened the reform movement, and ultimately inspired a revolution for independence. His perseverance and will, undeterred even in the most oppressive and difficult of circumstances, remind us that the achievement of great causes is made possible by ordinary people who are willing to make extraordinary sacrifices.

On Dr. Rizal's birth anniversary, we are called upon to emulate his integrity, perseverance and courage, and to participate in the fight against poverty, injustice, oppression and corruption. This way, we uphold Dr. Rizal's legacy of heroism, and become heroes ourselves.
